By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to :
1. Define principles of the “Get Permission Approach” as it relates to pediatric feeding challenges for children and families
2. List four principles of a successful mealtime
3. Define trust in each of the infant and parent roles in feeding, from infancy through three years of age
4. List anatomical and physiological and gastrointestinal factors which have influence on mealtime permission
5. Define health, appetite, neurological and growth influences on mealtimes
6. Define eating as a learned behavior.
7. Define the importance of non-judgmental therapeutic vocabulary in parent support.
8. Describe the importance of hunger/appetite in internal motivation to eat.
9. Define oral cautiousness vs oral aversion
10. Describe the “Get Permission Approach” as it relates to sensory/enjoyment challenges for children and families.
11. List at least 15 treatment strategies in a continuum supporting success for parent and child each.
12. Describe the “Get Permission Approach” as it relates to support for tube fed children and their families.
13. List the transitions plateaus for children and adults characteristic of tube feeding transitions.
14. Define exploratory and calorie reduction appetite challenges and give three examples of each.
15. Describe ways the “Get Permission Approach” can support anxious eaters and their mealtimes.
16. Describe five ways to support parent success.
17. Create and practice setting goals and specific “Get Permission” treatment activities and family supports.
"Get Permission" is an approach to pediatric mealtimes and feeding treatment based on a foundation of trust in the feeding relationship. The purpose of this relationship-based workshop is to provide treatment and family support strategies for children with feeding mealtime challenges. It supports children gaining eating success based on enjoyment of the sensory and social aspects of eating, confidence in their oral skills and internal motivation to eat enough. It follows the child's lead with creative and sensitive mealtime treatment strategies that adjust based on each child’s response. It celebrates parents and focuses on their success. We look at the complicated Influences of giving permission in eating. We discuss ways to support children who are worried about mealtimes, those who are fed by tube, or are on the autism spectrum. Case studies will be reviewed and discussed.
